Green Pencil Foundation, in collaboration with Ataavi Bird Foundation, organised a Bird Guide Walk at Sikanderpur Pahadi, Gurugram, on 13 September 2026, bringing participants closer to the rich birdlife and natural biodiversity found within the urban landscape.
Sikanderpur Pahadi is an important green space in the Gurugram region, offering a habitat for a variety of birds and other forms of wildlife. Despite being surrounded by a rapidly developing city, the landscape provides an opportunity to observe how nature continues to coexist with urbanisation.
Learning to See Nature Differently
The Bird Guide Walk was designed as an experiential learning activity, encouraging participants to observe nature carefully rather than simply pass through it.
During the walk, participants explored the trails of Sikanderpur Pahadi and learnt the basics of bird identification, bird behaviour, calls and field observation. With guidance from experienced birders, participants were encouraged to use their senses to identify birds and understand the ecological role they play.
From watching birds in flight to listening carefully to calls hidden within the vegetation, every observation became an opportunity to learn something new about the local ecosystem.
Discovering Gurugram’s Birdlife
The walk highlighted the diversity of birds that can be found in and around Gurugram’s urban green spaces. Participants had the opportunity to observe several species and understand how different birds use different habitats for feeding, nesting and shelter.
Birdwatching also provides a simple way for people to understand larger environmental issues. Changes in bird populations can provide important clues about changes in habitat, food availability, water sources and overall ecosystem health.
Why Urban Birding Matters
As cities expand, natural habitats face increasing pressure from construction, pollution, habitat fragmentation and the loss of green spaces. Urban biodiversity therefore deserves greater attention.
Bird walks are one simple way of building this awareness. They help people develop a personal connection with local ecosystems and understand that conservation is not limited to forests and protected areas, it also begins in the neighbourhoods, parks, wetlands and green spaces around us.
