Birding with Youth: Exploring Wildlife Coexistence at Lodhi Garden

On 6 September 2026, Green Pencil Foundation, in collaboration with Ataavi Bird Foundation, organised a Bird Guide Walk at Lodhi Garden, Delhi, from 4:00 PM to 6:00 PM for students of Bhagwan Parshuram Institute of Technology (BPIT), Delhi.

The session brought together young people and nature in one of Delhi’s well-known green spaces, creating an opportunity for students to step away from their usual routines and experience urban biodiversity firsthand.

Led as an interactive learning experience, the bird walk encouraged students to observe birds in their natural surroundings, understand their behaviour and recognise the importance of urban green spaces as habitats for wildlife. Rather than simply focusing on identifying species, the session encouraged participants to ask questions, notice patterns and develop a greater curiosity about the natural world around them.

For many young people, cities are often experienced through roads, buildings and technology. Experiences like these offer a different perspective showing that wildlife is not something found only in forests and protected areas. Birds, insects, trees and other forms of life continue to share our cities with us.

The session also highlighted the idea of wildlife coexistence. As urban areas continue to expand, creating and protecting green spaces becomes increasingly important for both people and wildlife. Learning to observe wildlife responsibly and understanding the needs of urban species can help build a more thoughtful relationship between communities and nature.

At Green Pencil Foundation, we believe that youth engagement is an important part of building a future where people and wildlife can coexist. By creating accessible opportunities for young people to explore nature, we hope to encourage curiosity, environmental responsibility and a lasting interest in biodiversity conservation.

The Lodhi Garden bird walk was more than a two-hour outdoor activity it was an opportunity to learn, explore and see the city from a different perspective.
