On the occasion of the International Day of the World’s Indigenous Peoples, Green Pencil Foundation, in collaboration with the Delhi Development Authority (DDA), Delhi Forest Department and Meet & Greet Dwarka, organised a Mega Tree Plantation Drive in Dwarka, New Delhi on 9 August 2026.
The plantation drive brought together local residents, children and community members, who joined hands to plant trees and contribute towards creating a greener and healthier urban environment.
Bringing the Community Closer to Nature
The objective of the initiative was not simply to plant trees, but to encourage greater community participation in environmental conservation.
Children and residents actively participated in the plantation activity, experiencing first-hand the importance of caring for trees and green spaces. For Green Pencil Foundation, such initiatives are an important way of helping communities reconnect with nature while encouraging environmental responsibility among the younger generation.
A tree planted today can become a source of shade, cleaner air, biodiversity and ecological value for years to come.
Why Community Participation Matters
Urban tree plantation is most meaningful when local communities become part of the process.

The International Day of the World’s Indigenous Peoples is observed by the United Nations every year on 9 August. The UN highlights the important relationship Indigenous Peoples have with their lands, territories and natural resources, as well as their contributions to protecting biodiversity and ecosystems.
For Green Pencil Foundation, the occasion provided an opportunity to reinforce a broader message: protecting nature requires participation, respect for ecological knowledge and stronger connections between people and the environment.
Tree plantation is one small but visible action through which communities can begin building that connection.
